Real Change from Real Answers

2025 Fediverse Needs Assessment: How Your Answers Became Action in 2024

Last year, moderators and administrators from across the Fediverse – and beyond – told us what they needed most. We listened, and the results shaped real tools, guidance, and resources.

From the 2024 Needs Assessment, IFTAS delivered:

CSAM detection and reporting guidance to help moderators handle the most serious content safely and legally. Our Fediverse CSAM Scanner was deployed for 12 weeks, and the results were shared. The system we built remains available, although currently unfunded to run. In addition, we are monitoring efforts from ROOST and IWF to provide safety tools to decentralised communities.

Advocacy and compliance guidance. We attended online safety webinars, met with regulators, and educated law enforcement and government on how federated social works. We provided DSA and OSA compliance guidance to support communities facing complex regulatory requirements.

The CARIAD domain observatory, improving how we understand and respond to harmful domains.

Open-sourcing FediCheck, making our domain federation management tooling accessible to all communities.

Growing our Community Library to over 100 best practices, articles and how-tos.

Translations of the shared vocabulary into Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, and French, breaking down language barriers. (Add your translations on crowdin)

These changes happened because moderators shared their stories. This year, we’re asking again: what’s changed, what’s improved, and what still needs urgent attention? The survey takes under 10 minutes, all questions are optional, only share what you’re comfortable with.
